Do you need to address workplace health and safety selection criteria? I've got you covered with these examples.

Ability to identify workplace hazards and provide practical guidance and advice on the application of workplace health and safety legislation, technical standards, and codes of practice.

In my experience, workplace hazards are a constant reality, particularly in high-risk environments such as my experience in the military, and policing. My career as a Police Officer has many potential dangers, from physical harm to the unpredictability of human behaviour. One memorable instance that highlights my commitment to safety, occurred recently when I responded to a distress call at a local park in Townsville.

On arrival at approximately 6 pm, the scene was chaotic and volatile. A report indicated that a person had been stabbed, and upon assessment, I confirmed that a female had sustained serious injuries. However, the situation quickly escalated as I discovered approximately 20 individuals engaged in a violent altercation, fuelled by alcohol. Complicating matters further, most of the group were known to be hostile towards law enforcement.

With only one other officer accompanying me, our immediate priority was to safely extract the wounded individual from the midst of the crowd. On route to the scene, my partner and I had discussed potential hazards and devised a strategy to mitigate risks. This included the safety of bystanders, our own well-being, and the potential for further escalation if the crowd dispersed uncontrollably.

We opted to utilise capsicum spray to subdue multiple individuals obstructing our access to the injured party. Once we secured the victim, we retreated approximately 100 meters away to administer first aid. While my partner attended to the medical needs, I took charge of managing the situation, coordinating with multiple responding units via radio communication. I ensured that each crew approached the scene from specific angles to contain the crowd and prevent the hazards from spreading.

Through effective coordination, we successfully brought the situation under control. Offenders were apprehended, and the safety of nearby businesses and workers was preserved. Following the incident, I reported on the incident and as a result, city cameras were installed in the park to enhance surveillance and pre-empt future incidents. This experience demonstrates my ability to provide practical advice and guidance to ensure the safety of myself and others.

Apply risk management principles and to generate and implement creative and innovative strategies to control hazards and improve health and safety outcomes in a range of contemporary high-risk workplaces.

In my role as 2nd Officer in Charge (2OIC) of a section at the Royal Military College, I demonstrated proficiency in implementing and overseeing risk-based management (RBM) protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of all personnel under my command.

Tasked with supervising a team of 11 individuals, I enforced RBM procedures covering various aspects of our operations. This included the management of controlled stores such as firearms, ordnance, firearm attachments, ammunition, and pyrotechnics, where strict adherence to safety protocols was needed to mitigate potential hazards. Additionally, I took responsibility for the upkeep of common facilities, including dormitories and showers, to maintain high standards of hygiene and sanitation.

Recognising the importance of hydration, I ensured that designated water stores were adequately stocked to meet the needs of all personnel, minimising the risk of dehydration during activities.

I provided guidance and management support to my team, facilitating their adherence to RBM guidelines. Through effective leadership and oversight, I ensured that our section maintained exemplary standards of accountability and safety. Upon the conclusion of my role as 2OIC, a stores check revealed that our section had excelled in maintaining inventory, with no losses or misplacements recorded and that the absence of any personnel extraction during activities showed the success of our approach in safeguarding the health and well-being of our team members. By prioritising risk management and fostering a culture of accountability, I contributed to the overall effectiveness and readiness of our unit, ensuring that operational objectives were achieved.

Well-developed analytical, conceptual and investigation skills and ability to gather evidence and determine the circumstances and outcomes arising from workplace incidents.

As a police officer, my daily duties often involve gathering evidence to ensure the safety of the community is maintained. Recently, I was dispatched to an address in in response to reports of an armed person/domestic violence incident. On arrival, I encountered a woman who initially claimed that nothing had occurred, and that police intervention was unnecessary.

I engaged with the woman in a tactful manner, asking her multiple times and in various ways if she required assistance. My goal was not to agitate her but to gauge her responses which could aid my investigation. Aware of her vulnerability due to her isolated living conditions and dependence on her husband, I approached the situation with sensitivity and understanding. Despite the initial denial of any wrongdoing, I persisted in my inquiries, recognising the importance of thorough investigation in cases of domestic violence. Upon further inquiry with neighbours, I discovered a potential witness—a male who worked at the local clinic and had been present at the residence prior to the police's arrival.

This involved a potential conflict of interest, as the witness's boss was the husband's mother. It took two days to building rapport and trust with him before he provided an account of the incident, including critical information regarding the unlawful possession of firearms and the use of weapons to threaten the female victim.  Based on this information, I was able to obtain a search warrant, which led to the confiscation of firearms, spears, and ammunition from the offender's residence. The evidence not only strengthened the case but also ensured the safety of the victim and the wider community.

Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills and the proven ability to develop and deliver appropriate advisory, education, and information services to clients, resolve disputes constructively, and prepare timely and accurate technical reports.

As a leader, I am deeply committed to ensuring that my communication is clear, respectful, and effective in conveying the intended message. I prioritise educating and empowering others, rather than belittling them, and I am always willing to seek out answers to questions I may not know the immediate answer to, ensuring continuous improvement and knowledge enhancement.

In my role as a police officer, I am aware of the importance of communication, particularly when interacting with individuals during challenging and often distressing situations. Whether providing guidance, support, or crucial information, I approach each interaction with empathy and professionalism, recognising that I may be encountering individuals on some of the worst days of their lives. It is my duty to communicate in a manner that is not only appropriate but also facilitates understanding and assistance to the best of my ability. My proficiency in de-escalation techniques is of a high standard, allowing me to manage diverse situations and individuals, irrespective of cultural background, language barriers, or intoxication levels. Additionally, my aptitude for accurate reporting means I meet deadlines and maintain the highest standards of quality in my reports.

Work independently and contribute constructively to a multi-disciplinary team by setting priorities, planning, monitoring, and evaluating workflow and creating and implementing continuous improvements in work practices and procedures.

While I appreciate the dynamics of team collaboration, I also recognise the importance of having time to manage my individual responsibilities effectively. Each day, I navigate through a continuous stream of tasks, ensuring that they are handled efficiently to prevent accumulation. This involves an assessment of priorities, considering the level of risk associated with each assignment. By prioritising high-risk tasks based on available information, I ensure that critical matters are addressed first. My ability to work independently has been cultivated over years of experience, spanning from my time at the Royal Military College, where I successfully completed complex navigation courses relying solely on my skills and tools.

More recently, as a Police Officer operating remotely in the Nappa region, encompassing Aboriginal communities such as Narita and Moura, I have demonstrated self-reliance and adaptability in challenging environments. Even in high-pressure, fast-paced incidents, I remain attentive to my surroundings, effectively managing risks while attending to urgent matters. This blend of independence, situational awareness, and effective communication demonstrates my ability to navigate diverse environments and handle demanding situations with confidence and efficiency.
